FAQ

As a leader to empower lives, creating opportunities and strengthen the bond of humanity.

How are children selected for HHRD registration sponsorship?

Step 1: Choosing the Area
Following an emergency such as a natural disaster or conflict, HHRD provides relief in three
stages. Hot meals, drinking water and tents to start off the relief efforts and later when the
need for immediate relief slows down Helping Hand commits to long term development with
the goal of improving life for survivors beyond that single trauma. The Orphan Sponsorship
Program is one of these long-term projects because it helps today’s children grow up to make
their country better in the future.
HHRD picks areas or “clusters” based on how much help they need. Here’s how we choose:
• Safety First: The area must be safe and controlled by the government.
• Based on Need: Areas that need the most help are chosen first and sent to HHRD USA
headquarters for approval.
• Donor Suggestions: Sometimes people who donate money suggest specific areas to help.
• Government Requests: Local governments sometimes ask HHRD to help certain areas.
They also divide up areas among different help organizations so the same work isn’t done
twice in one place.
Step 2: Meeting with Local Leaders
Once an area is approved, HHRD meets with village leaders, district heads, and school
principals. Social workers then start collecting information about families and children who
need help.
Step 3: Choosing Individual Children
After the area is chosen, HHRD picks individual children based on these rules:
• Equal gender division: They choose the same number of boys and girls
• One child per family: Only one child from each family can be chosen (unless the community
is very small or there are special cases like children taking care of their families)
• No double help: Children who are already getting help from other organizations cannot be
chosen
• Fair for everyone: HHRD helps children from all backgrounds – different races, religions,
and groups
• Proper paperwork: A child can only join the program when all their documents are checked
and confirmed to be real

Each child registered under the Orphan Support Program will receive support in each of
these areas, no matter where they live.
1. Food & Subsistence – Food distributions at least four times per year, clothing and monetary support
2. Education – Tuition fees, books, uniforms and school supplies
3. Health – Annual medical checkups, healthcare assistance through referrals to
specialists, and hygiene kits
4. Social Upliftment – extracurricular activities that include sports and art competitions,
Eid parties and other seasonal parties. Celebration of National Holidays etc.
5. Child Protection Rights – Follow up with children and families in the home and school
to ensure safe living spaces free from abuse and neglect
Definition of a child and an orphan
• A child refers to someone below eighteen (18) years of age.
• An orphan is a person whose father died before they reached the age of puberty.
Are all orphan sponsorships $50/month?
• The sponsorship donation amount will remain the same at $50/month for all 23
countries under the HHRD Orphan Support Program Portfolio.

If you are unable to maintain $50 per month, you are welcome to donate any amount to general orphan support. The general orphan support fund is utilized to provide assistance to orphans who are not currently part of the sponsorship system or to support the registration of new orphans until we can find a dedicated donor for them. General orphan support does not involve one-to-one sponsorship, whereas Helping Hand USA provides you with information about the specific child you are supporting. Instead, it constitutes a collective pool of funds that HHRD taps into when financial resources are required for the Orphan Support program.

You can update your name, address and phone number on the website by following these
instructions:
• Access HHRD.org and click login at top
• Dashboard shows membership duration, donation history, and donor information. Here
is where you will be able to update your account.
• Under “My Sponsorships” section:
 » View sponsored children’s information
 » Access photos
 » Check family details
 » Review health reports
» Monitor sponsorship beginning and end dates

Children are eligible for the program until they turn 18. However, HHRD also has other
programs that your sponsored child can take advantage of, such as internships through Youth Empowerment, vocational training through Skills Development and scholarships through the Higher Education Support Program. Other donors have chosen to continue their support of a sponsored child through some of these exciting options.

 • The Orphan Sponsorship Program at Helping Hand USA was initiated in 2005.
Among the four major components of Education, Health, Food and Subsistence, and
Psychosocial Upliftment, our primary focus has always been on the understanding that without education, these children cannot transform their futures. With just $30 a month, we provided our orphans with two substantial food packages and cash allowances throughout the year.
• In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and nearly everything came to a standstill, except for our ongoing support to orphans, HHRD allocated special relief funds to assist the orphans and their families in response to the noticeable surge in unemployment within our beneficiary families.
• This year, due to the growing food insecurity resulting from rising food prices, increased inflation, heightened unemployment, and economic instability worldwide, our impact assessment surveys revealed that our registered orphans desperately need additional food support. Unfortunately, Helping Hand USA is finding it increasingly challenging to sustain this support without an increase in donations. We have faced difficult decisions as the cost of essential staples such as cooking oil, wheat, and sugar has doubled and, in some places, nearly tripled.
• Comparable prices for orphan sponsorship may not include the same level of service. Smaller donation levels may be contributions to a general fund instead of a true sponsorship. This option is also available through HHRD.

• Helping Hand USA works diligently to maintain our administrative expenses within
the range of 10-12%. We aim to ensure that your donations reach the beneficiaries as
originally intended. Despite increasing inflation, the cost of implementation has also risen. However, we are committed to collaborating with our field teams to identify ways to stay within our established standards.
• Helping Hand USA is not only accredited by the BBB (Better Business Bureau) but is also recognized as a 4-star charitable organization, placing it among the top 5% of the total 9,000 charities evaluated by Charity Navigator. To see our ratings, please visit Charity Navigator

If we haven’t heard back from you within a 30-day period from when the sponsorship has expired, the orphan profile will be removed from your account and placed back on the website as an available sponsorship.

You can cancel your recurring donation if you wish. Please call us at 313-279-5378 Option 2,
Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST.

You can make your donations monthly or yearly. When going through the selection process and finalizing your method of support, you will have the option to select monthly or yearly billing.
