12 Years of Displacement – The Syrian Refugee Crisis

The Syrian Refugee crisis is one of history’s most prolonged humanitarian crises. March 15, 2023, marks the 12th anniversary of the crisis, which began when civil war broke out in Syria. Since then, an estimated 13 million have been displaced, and 6.7 million refugees have fled the country, seeking safety in neighboring countries and beyond. An entire generation of Syrian refugees has grown up witnessing unrest and hardships, and the next generation is living through these conditions as well. Despite the many challenges these refugees face, Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) has been working tirelessly to provide them with much-needed assistance.

One of the most crucial areas of support for these refugees is education. Syrian refugee children often can’t attend school because of their displacement or lack of documentation. HHRD’s Education Support Program has been working to address this issue by establishing mobile learning centers and providing educational materials and supplies to refugee children, allowing them access to equal education. The organization also offers skills development through the Skills Development and Learning Program and job placement services to help refugees build a better future for themselves and their families. Last year alone, your generous support of these programs helped over 1,800 children get an education, and more than 1,240 persons received skills training.

In addition to these services, HHRD provides emergency relief through food aid, shelter, and orphan support. Our teams are on the ground, responding to crises as they arise and providing assistance to those in need. Last year, your donations helped HHRD give shelter to more than 2,450 individuals. Caravans of Hope is a part of our Shelter Relief Program and was launched to help Syrian refugees living in make-shift tents and shelters with sturdy roofs over their heads. These homes have one and two-bedroom floorplans equipped with bathrooms and kitchens. Through our Orphan Support Program, you helped sponsor over 3.600 children. Imagine the impact you made on them!

The growing population of refugees in overcrowded camps puts them at a high risk of contracting diseases due to a lack of services and limited access to clean water. HHRD has also helped establish health clinics in refugee camps, providing medical equipment, supplies, and cataract surgeries. Last year, 172 cataract surgeries were performed on Syrian refugees. Our Water for Life Program has been providing them with clean and safe drinking water, and in 2022, over 1,860 refugees benefited from this program.

Despite the many challenges faced by Syrian refugees and the organizations that support them, HHRD remains committed to its mission. Over the past 12 years, we have helped countless individuals and families, providing them with the support they need to survive and thrive, all with your help. You have enabled our organization to provide relief and rehabilitation services to struggling refugee families who have been displaced to leave their homes and loved ones behind. As Ramadan approaches, let’s remember our brothers and sisters in despair. Last year you helped provide food to over 64,150 Syrian refugees through our Ramadan Food Program. This year, dare to care for many more.
